Cannot Upgrade / Install New Version / Delete Old Version

Post by QueenBeeMa » Mon Dec 20, 2010 10:35 am

Hi all.

I just bought a registration key for my Sandboxie. First I tried to type it in and it wasn't accepted because I had an old version. Then I tried to update and got this message:

"The following programs must be closed before the installation can continue
SbieCtrl.exe _____________ PID 2864 Session 2"

Well I decided it might be best to just uninstall the whole program and start from scratch. So I used "Add or Remove Programs" (Windows XP) and uninstalled Sandboxie. When I tried to install the newest version I got the same error message.

I found a Sandboxie folder in my Program Files even after the uninstall, but am unable to delete it. I am on the administrator screen and should have the proper permissions, but keep getting the following error message:

"Cannot delete SbieCtrl.exe: Access is denied.
Make sure the disk is not full or write protected and that the file is not currently in use."

When I go to my task manager, there don't seem to be any sandboxie applications or processes running.

Help!

What do I need to stop or change or delete so that I can get my install to work?

I am a new Sandboxie user, so I don't have any Sandboxie-specific help.
For security software in general, it is good to uninstall in Safe Mode so that the drivers are not loaded during the uninstall.
For failed uninstalls, Revo Uninstaller Professional's forced uninstall feature may be useful.

If Sandboxie Control is running, it should show up in Task Manager (on the "Processes" tab) as "SbieCtrl.exe".

Here's what I would try ...
To kill Control, and also to stop the Sandboxie Service:
Start > Run > then type:
cmd
in the "Open:" box and click OK

In the black command window, type:
taskkill /f /im sbiectrl.exe
and press <Enter>

While still in the command window, type:
net stop sbiesvc
and press <Enter>
to stop the Sandboxie service, in case it is still running.

Then exit the command window and try to delete the
C:\Program Files\Sandboxie
folder.
If it deletes OK, reboot and try a reinstall.

If you still have trouble during the reinstall, then reinstall to
C:\Program Files\Sbie
instead of
C:\Program Files\Sandboxie

If you delete the folder in C:\Program Files\ before running the Revo uninstaller, it won't clean up the registry as well. This is because it uses the folder and maybe executable names in its search of the registry.

The free System Explorer utility provides a convenient and user-friendly method to stop and disable services and processes.
