Orcs Must Die! (steam game) No Sound

Post by Qhorin Halfhand » Wed Oct 19, 2011 6:51 am

Hello,

Prerequisites: Using latest Sandboxie x64 on Win7. The problematic Sandbox uses the standard settings without any special restrictions.

As many others I do not fancy to run steam outside of a sandbox. Usually that never gave me too much trouble with the few games I play, after some tweaking every once in a while.
The new game Orcs Must Die! installs and runs fine in my "Gamebox", but it has no sound. I tried many of the various possible fixes by lifting Sandboxie restrictions bit by bit, but I cannot get the sound to work. Strangely enough the game even shows up in the Win7 sound mixer when run. The sound problems connected to a sandboxed use of the game seem to be known, although not really intensively and with no fix offered.
Directly installed onto a virtual machine the sound works fine.
A demo of the game is available on steam.

Any pointer into a direction on how to further explore this problem or how to fix it would be highly appreciated.

Regards,
Qhorin

P.S.: Congrats tzuk on the most recent "round" final version and hopefully many more to come :)
I celebrated the occasion by upgrading my 1-year license to a lifetime license, thanks for the great offer!

If you go into Sandbox Settings > Restrictions > Hardware Access and check the two options there, does that make any difference?

Sorry, I should have made it more clear what I meant when I mentioned lifting Sandboxie restrictions bit by bit.
Lowering restrictions by turning on the relevant switches in the Low-Level Access and Hardware Access tabs where the first steps I tried. It did not help.

Ok, in that case, thanks for giving all the details necessary to reproduce the problem.

Qhorin Halfhand did you ever find a solution to the problem? I have the exact same issue. Game sound works fine outside the sandbox but once run inside, it stops to work. I've used the sandbox for a long time and this is the first game i have encountered that has this problem.

I'm afraid I don't see this problem, I installed the demo into sandboxed Steam and I get sound just fine.
I think this means the problem has to do with a specific aspect of a specific sound drivers and I probably have different sound drivers.

Try posting your Resource Monitor log:

Sorry for the late response, I must have missed your reply
I already finished the game and deleted it. But when I just reinstalled it I was not able to reproduce the problem. Sound is working now. As basically nothing has changed on my system, some game update must have fixed the issue.

Either way - thank you for taking the time to look into the issue, tzuk. Your support is greatly appreciated.

Qhorin
