sandboxing Snagit 8.20 with Sandbox 2.85

Post by Unknown_User_619 » Sat Apr 14, 2007 4:16 pm

unable to get Snagit 8.2 to function properly, while sandboxed under 2.85, user defined profiles are blank and the "Snagit One Click" drop down menu is blanked out, been using 2.64 for several months and Snagit works just great with the old version, anyone else had this problem ?

See SnDPhoenix's posting here:
http://sandboxie.com/phpbb/viewtopic.ph ... ght=snagit .

I think he's got it right, but the news is not good.

I expect you love SnagIt, but I find FSCapture does everything I ever did with SnagIt -- and FSCapture is free and is a no-install portable. It runs just fine in the sandbox.

If interested, you can find FSCapture at http://www.faststone.org/index.htm .

hmm, have you installed Snagit into sandboxie and are running it, or did you install outside the sandbox and are running it through sandboxie? also how di dyou get it running fine in 2.64 but not 2.85, if anything i would think it would be the opposite, only thing i can think is to run a trace see if something is blocked, and then open path to w/e is blocked.

Snagit 8.2 and Sandboxie 2.85

Post by Unknown_User_619 » Sun Apr 15, 2007 7:46 am

reply to SnDPhoenix,

Snagit is normally installed in windows xp-pro, just sandbox it, so I am able to capture scrolling web pages, otherwise Snagit does not need to be sandboxed, Snagit will not capture a scrolling web page that is sandbox protected, something has changed since 2.64.

jrhowell99,

I understand that you want to continue to use SnagIt and I'm not trying to change your mind.

Since FSCapture works the same way (including capturing scrolling pages and including a graphic editor), and since it is a free no-install portable that does not change the Windows registry or write files outside its own folder, you might use it for diagnosis. If you have the same problem with FSCapture that you're having with SnagIt, that would suggest your problem might be machine (or local software) specific. Also, if the same problem occurs with FSCapture, it will be easier for Ronen to replicate, since FSCapture is freeware.

Anyway, if you're willing to try it just for diagnosis purposes, it is available at http://www.faststone.org/index.htm .

Again, I'm not trying to persuade you to give up SnagIt, which is a great tool. A lot of folks use it and it is important that we get Sandboxie to work with it, but FSCapture might help us get there.

Good luck.

Snagit 8.2 and Sandboxie 2.85

Post by Unknown_User_619 » Sun Apr 15, 2007 10:29 am

I am really hooked on Snagit, primarly the mouseover drop down menu, sure beats hitting a function key to do a capture, just mouse click. Snagit has a free trial from Techsmith.com, possibly 15 to 30 days trial peroid, would be a good download for others trying to duplicate my problem. I will try the FSCapture program, I think I have it, just never used it.

I can't produce any problems with SnagIt. Scroll-down-web-capture works. I've created a profile (though I'm not really sure what I was doing except clicking Next on the wizard). I created it in an unsandboxed SnagIt and it's still there in a sandboxed instance.

Basically, jrhowell99, what I'm saying is, I need you to give me a step-by-step of what doesn't work, because a casual use doesn't reveal any problem, for me.

snagit 8.2 and sandboxie 2.85

did you try the snagit one click "mouseover drop down menu", it should contain the same profile that you created in the non-sandboxed mode. after you create a stored profile, then exit Snagit and then sandbox it and see if the profile is still there and the mouse over snagit one click is not blank or void of the profile that you created. On my system the profiles show up in the main body of the program, but the drop down menu is void of that information. (all in version 2.85) (but not is 2.64).

@ jrhowell99
i have had Snagit installed for a couple years, and funnily enough i have never created a stored profile, so i did what you said you are doing (which isnt working correctly with you) and it works perfectly fine for me, i open Snagit sandboxed and the profile i created shows up, user defined profiles are not blank, and my one click menu is not blanked out AND the profile i created is under the one click menu, im using latest version of Snagit and latest version of Sandboxie, so obviously something is wrong on your pc, something might be conflicting on your machine or something.

Not being an ass, but stop trying to force FSCapture onto the guy, he obviously wants to use Snagit, and i dont blame him, the best "image capture" programs are Snagit and Fullshot, the only good thing that FastStone makes btw is FastStone Image Viewer, been using it for about 3 years.

SnDPhoenix,

I'm not sure how you could think I was trying to force FSCapture onto him. I specifically said I was recommending it only to diagnose whether the problem occured in both programs. I also said:

I used SnagIt for a long time and found it to be a great tool. However, after I found a portable version of FSCapture, I uninstalled SnagIt and have not missed it. I'm surprised that you would say " the only good thing that FastStone makes btw is FastStone Image Viewer." That's just your opinion and its quite different from saying something like "I prefer SnagIt." You'll note I said nothing negative about SnagIt, recognizing that everyone has his or her own preferences for such tools.

So, my bottom line is that I'm not trying to force any program on anyone. Why would I?

lol, sorry about that and yes your right, everyone has there own opinions and preferences, its just sometimes i tend to bring up my opinions and somehow make them sound like the are facts  , the only reason i said you were forcing it onto the guy was caused it seemed like you kept bringing it up until he would "give in" and use FSCapture instead of Snagit, but it was just a stupid thing to say. No Hard feelings :?. Also i would like to bring up something interesting, i have known about FastStone for a few years, and when they first introduced FSCapture, well simply put, it was real buggy, so i stopped using it, and stuck with Snagit, (which had always been the best i ever tried imo), well i just tried FSCapture portable version a few minutes ago and HOLY..., i have now unistalled Snagit and stuck with FSCapture, so i now have 2 of the 4 FastStone programs on my pc i cant live without. :) , anyways i agree with you that the guy should try FSCapture and see if it works with him or not, if it does (which im sure it will) then we know the problem is with Snagit.

SnDPhoenix,

Thanks. I assumed you had just skimmed the thread and were responding to the fact that I had mentioned FSCapture more than once.

I haven't used SnagIt in a year or so, so it may well offer more features than FSCapture. After John said he was "hooked" on SnagIt and Ronen said he had not been able to reproduce the conflicts with Sandboxie using the trial version of SnagIt, I didn't bring up FSCapture again.

I've started using and recommending as much no-install/portable software as possible, because its easy to try it out without risk to the registry. Of course, Sandboxie provides a great way of trying out software that does write to the registry.

I always appreciate your comments on the forum. Keep up the good work.

I was able to reproduce and fix jrhowell99's problem with the disappearing profiles.

(If anyone wants to experience the problem first hand, you need to run SnagIt sandboxed, close it without deleting the sandbox, then start it sandboxed a second time. You will see the main window which lists the profiles, has become blank.)

Updated SbieDll:

http://www.sandboxie.com/SbieDll.dll

Note, to replace SbieDll, you would need to end all sandboxed programs, end Sandboxie Control, stop the Sandboxie service SbieSvc, and only then replace the file.

* * *

On a side note, initially I thought the problem had to do with Sandboxie lower-casing registry keys as they are sandboxed. So I un-did this dubious "feature" for the updated DLL. I think at least one person will find this interesting. :)
