Sandboxes failing to erase

Post by henryg » Tue Apr 07, 2015 12:25 pm

I'm not sure when it started, but I have sandboxes (set to auto delete) failing to delete, and not giving warnings that deletion has failed. It seems to be when files are in use, or "cannot be moved" or some such. I'm pretty sure I saw another message on this topic, but cannot find it now.

Sandboxie 4.17.1 64bit; eraser 5 (delete command - "C:\Windows\System32\Eraserl.exe" -folder "%SANDBOX%" -subfolders -method DoD_E -resultsonerror -queue).

I am not so concerned that it cannot delete open files, but not receiving an error message is a serious issue. At one time a "terminate all programs" command stopped everything and allowed deletion to happen, but apparently no longer.

henryg.

I thing I might have an answer. Try Unchecking "Windows Shell Integration" in the Control Panel under Configuration. After that, Reboot your Computer and wait until Sandboxie loads. Right-click on the Sandboxie Icon and highlight the sandbox that has the undeleted files, then click Delete Contents. If you're lucky, it'll delete everything and your Sandbox will be back to normal.

Hi Ken

One way or another I always manage to delete them manually. Does your solution return the basic functionality afterwards?

Curt, do you have any input?

I had encountered a similar issue with the boxes not being removed after installing certain security softwares but I also never used a 3rd party program to wipe the boxes. Something on your system is likely delaying the release of the files or folders in your boxes.

My solution was to use imdisk, create a non-persistent virtual ramdisk (mines set to 1G but you could likely get away with a lot less) at boot using a script and set Sandboxie to use the ramdisk drive for those boxes I want auto-deleted anyway. That way whenever I reboot I can be sure that the boxes are empty. This wouldn't necessarily help with per session deletes (eg launching the same app sandboxed multiple times prior to a reboot) but for *some* reason it has worked for me on those as well. Either way it would also save your HDD from unneeded writing trying to wipe those boxes every time they are closed.
Using a ramdisk may not be feasible for you depending on your ram situation though.

I have recently added memory, so a ramdisk is a possibility and may be a good idea anyway, although as you say it will not sort my problem fully.

I am disappointed that Invincea staff have not commented - to confirm, or not, it is an issue, and whether it is new :(

This annoying bug seems not to be too important... Here is my thread: http://forums.sandboxie.com/phpBB3/view ... 15#p107603

Interesting that a company whose very existence is based on security and privacy takes such a cavalier attitude. For me, this is a MAJOR issue :(

Could even be Explorer - but it was never an issue in the past

Now giving this a try; and a side benefit is that browsing now seems to be faster :D

I looked at a few programs, but imdisk seems easy to use and looks to be working well. Thank you.

It is ironic that the issue has resulted in a better setup for me, but I do not think that repeating a response which was inadequate in the first place is now any better.

I'm sorry you don't like the response, but it is what it is. Everyone wants their problems fixed immediately. We have to prioritize based on many factors. This is a rare problem that affects very few users.

Have you tried using Process Explorer from sysinternals.com to determine what process has sandboxed files locked? Does the sandbox delete work after a reboot?

Hi henry, like btm, I dont use 3rd party programs to delete the sandbox. I don't have problems deleting any of my sandboxes in either of my two computers. Iis been years since I experienced a deleting on closing issue. I stopped experiencing almost completely that type of issue when I stopped using real time scanners. I suggest you take a look at any new security software that you installed recently. Perhaps, another security program is keeping your sandbox from deleting. :)

Bo, if you don't use antivirus, what firewall do you use?

Ok, but please remember that all of us spend our money for your software! Only security issues should have higher priority.

I bet many users have this issue but they do not recognize it until another problem occurs. Many problems reported in the forum are definitely in conjunction with the deletion failure.

Hi Safemist, I use Windows firewall in both, XP and W7. :)
