How to changing sandboxed apps default setting permanently

Post by ctblack68 » Fri Jan 25, 2013 12:50 pm

Every time I clean out the sandbox by deleting all the contents, all my apps inside the sandbox reverted back to when I first installed sandboxie. How do I make any changes inside sandboxie stay permanently?

When you run a program sandboxed, any changes made by the program will result in files being read from outside of the sandbox and then modified. The modified files will stay inside of the sandbox if you don't have a setting that allows those files to be saved outside of the sandbox.

For example, while you are running a browser sandboxed, you might add or delete a bookmark.
Or, you might make some settings change to the browser itself.
If those changes are not saved outside of the sandbox, then when you delete the contents of the sandbox those changed files will be deleted, and the next time you run it those changes will not be there.

So, what you need to do is to identify what files are being modified and then create a setting for that .exe program that will allow the files of your choosing to be saved outside of the sandbox.
There are many settings in Sandbox Settings > Applications that are intended to help with that, but not all possible programs can be listed there.
It's up to the individual to identify what files are being modified and create specific settings to allow them out of the sandbox. You can use Windows Explorer (unsandboxed) to examine the files in a sandbox before anything there is deleted, to try to identify files or folders that you want to allow out of the sandbox.

I understand about the grant access to outside files used by programs inside sandboxie, but that is not the question I am asking.
Sandboxie on first install seems to take a "snapshot" of the current environment and keep it as it's "restore point" so when ever there is a cleanup (deleting the content), it reverts back to when it was first installed. What I want to know is how do I tell sandboxie to update it's "restore point" when I made setting changes to programs running within sandboxie.
Also it is not easy to find all the files that are used by a program and understand what each of those files are used for. If just allowing the programs to access all its files it sorta defeats the purpose of sandbox a program.

There is no snapshot. There is no restore point.
Deleting the sandbox contents will cause the sandboxed program to have the same settings that exist outside of the sandbox.
