Associate http/https protocol

Post by NPC » Tue Feb 28, 2017 6:39 am

Hello everyone :)

I have a question about Sandboxie: How do I associate http/https protocols to a specific (portable) sandboxed-browser?

Furthermore, how can I enforce this even when an url is clicked in an other sandboxed-programm; for example Thunderbird or a PDF reader?

Hello NPC ,

Sandboxie is not designed to associate protocols to web browsers. You can set up your web browsers settings outside SBIE , and then run them Sandboxed.
What are you trying to do, exactly?

Here's an example of how to create multiple profiles for Firefox that might help you out:

If you launch Thunderbird (or other programs) Sandboxed and click on a hyper link, it will open inside a Sandboxed browser.

To force a program to start Sandboxed, used the Forced Program feature, please have a look at this link:

Hi Barb, thanks for your reply :)

I was thinking: when using a sandboxed browser, all changes are saved into the sandbox (updates, profile changes, extension settings, etc). Recovering these changes makes only sense for certain folder and files (for example downloads) not the entire program folder.

So I put a portable browser into a 'permanent' sandbox (meaning never deleting its content), which can easily be backed-up and restored since the program exists only at one location (sandbox) not two (initial installation folder + sandbox).

Now I'm wondering, how to configure Windows/Sandboxie to open http/https-urls with this portable, sandboxed browser...

As you say you are using the paid version and your browser is inside a sandbox you can go into Windows control panel and set the browser up under 'Default Programs'. Normally I'd say add the program exe as forced under Sandbox Settings > Program Start > Forced Programs as well.

Alternatively you could also create the htm, html, [there are quite a few] etc registry entries manually or harvest them from a VM where you install the regular (non-portable) version then adjust the path to the location of your portable one and add the path to Sandboxies start.exe along with the desired boxname in front of the rest then import it to your real systems registry. As you have the paid version and you say your portable browser is inside a persistent sandbox there shouldn't be a need to do it this way however.
