Recover e-mail - Is this possible?

Post by NiwoNul » Thu Jul 12, 2007 1:30 pm

Hi,

the question is about the option "Allow Mozilla Thunderbird full access.."
As I understand, this option has the result, that all e-mails are instantly in my un-sandboxed
Thunderbird too. I don't understand the security in it, as I could open Thunderbird un-sandboxed having "dangerous" e-mails in my inbox... I don't want that.

I would like to run Thunderbird sandboxed to see if all incoming emails are ok.
And only if so, then I would like to recover all "good" e-mails in my un-sandboxed Thunderbird.

Is this possible? I didn't found any help how to set up my configuration file...

There is an alternative, but understand that if you do it this way, the saved messages will NOT show up in your un-sandboxed Thunderbird Mailbox at all. They will exist on your hard drive as separate email messages that you can open with Thunderbird.

You can leave that option ("Allow Mozilla Thunderbird full access..") un-checked, but click Configuration > Sandbox Settings > Set Automatic Clean-up Options > under "Well known folders" click "My Documents". If there is any other folder where you might store your messages, in the box on that page you could put something like D:\SavedMessages\ , for example. I don't know if you are allowed to have any spaces in the path name in that box, and then use quotation marks, like "D:\Saved Messages\" , but you could try it if necessary. After your configuration change, click on Reload Configuration.

The result would be that you would have to click on each message that you wanted to save from Thunderbird , and then from the File menu click "Save as > File", and then browse to the appropriate folder where you want it saved. The message will still be in the sandbox, at this point, so you should pick a folder for the stored messages that you have already set up, above, as a Recover folder.

The messages will stay in the sandbox until you Recover them. If you set up the Automatic Clean-up Options as above, when you select Contents of Sandbox > Recover Files, it will find them and ask if you want to Recover them. If you had also checked "Enable Immediate Recover for These Folders" in the Options, you would be asked if you want to Recover the file (to your un-sandboxed hard drive folder) as soon as you save it.

*Edit* One thing I should mention if you don't let Thunderbird have full access, but you use the above procedure to save your emails: if you are using the same sandbox for your browser and for Thunderbird, and something happens with your Internet browsing where you decide to delete the contents of the sandbox, any email messages still in the sandboxed Thunderbird mailbox will also be deleted. I use different sandboxes for the browser and Thunderbird. That requires a registered version of Sandboxie.
