LastPass for Firefox no longer installing in Sandboxie

Post by majokey » Thu May 11, 2017 8:38 am

Actually, previously working installation of the LastPass plugin stopped working after upgrade to SBXIE 5.18 and re-installation failed too. I tried a few other random add-ons and those worked fine. Also tested with SRWare Iron, worked fine there.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Firefox 45.9esr on Windows 7 Pro (don't have access to 10 atm)
2. Firefox itself is installed directly in "naked" Windows, NOT in a sandbox
3. Open FF in the Default sandbox, Drop Rights box un-checked
4. Go to Add-ons, search for lastpass, start the installation
5. It will download fine, but the actual installation will hang
5.a. Same behavior with the Firefox and Windows .exe installers downloaded directly from lastpass.com

Why to do this in the first place? LastPass guards sensitive stuff. And god alone knows what issues other add-ons may have. So I like to have the "naked" installation of FF free of any add-ons, and only install them in Sandboxie. That way I can run the LastPass add-on on a completely clean, stock FF in Sandboxie.

Workaround:
1. Create a new profile* from the stock FF running "naked" on Windows
2. Install the LastPass add-on only in your new profile
3. For convenience, create a new copy of your FF icon on the Start Menu, rename it as you please, and make the Target in the Properties look something like this:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -p -no-remote LastPass
depending on what you named your new profile.
4. Right-click on your new FF icon and choose Run Sandboxed, in a sandbox of your choice (I have one that I use only for LastPass and nothing else)

For those who don't know how to easily create/delete FF profiles:
1. Create a copy of your FF icon in the Start Menu
2. Give it a sensible name, say, FF Profile Manager
3. Right-click, choose Properties and make the target look like this:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -p
4. Click OK to save
5. Click on your new icon and a pretty, GUI FF profile manager will open

Hello majokey,

Is there any reason why you are using that particular Firefox version?

I tested the latest stable Firefox 53.0.2 64 bits + Sandboxie 5.19.3 + Win 7 x64 and encountered no issues.
It installed fine inside Sandboxie, and I was able to see the login screen.

Have you tried creating a new Sandbox ?

We use the esr at work. And that's the latest esr version. I just tried it in a new sandbox, as opposed to one with just deleted content, and the result was the same. Sandbox settings copied from the default sandbox, which has never been changed. But if it works for you, then it must be the esr version that creates the problem. And I didn't mean it as a complaint, I just wanted you guys to know about it and post a workaround in case it could be useful for someone.

Thank you for this awesome product!

Hello majokey ,

I tested the latest ESR version (I found version 52, if you have a link to 49 I will test it), and the results were the same as before: no issues installing lastpass.

Can you please try a new Sandbox, without copying the settings?

Regards,
Barb.-
