A 'how to' question

Post by opera » Sat May 26, 2007 11:26 am

Just downloaded sandboxie today, and would appreciate a bit of help.

I went to

http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/

saw the screensaver, and thought it would be a good test.

Was I supposed to download it to my desktop and run it as sandboxed, does that work with screensavers? (I ask as I couldn't figure out how to get it to work!)

I like the concept of sandboxie, nice piece of software, once I get my head round it :)

i tried several demo's of screensavers, you can rightclick any file type you like and run it sandboxed, works with the screensaver as well...

Thanks for the reply.

I think I've worked that bit out now! I am enjoying testing new software without the worry of it affecting me.

Only problem I have now is how do I stop my Online Armour from showing all the things I test sandboxed in it's programs list. They are listed there when I have emptied the sandbox, but show nowhere else.

Ok.

I sandboxed opera, downloaded artweaver to try, went into 'contents of sandbox' found the exe, and double-clicked.

Online Armour popsup for my permission to allow this on my computer, I say yes and yes to the temp file also.

Have a play with software and then delete all contents of sandbox without keeping anything. No problems.

However when I look in my Online Armour history and program list Artweaver prog and temp file are in the list, a reboot and they are still there. Obviously I wouldn't run Online Armour sandboxed.

Is there a way to use sandboxie so OA doesn't keep the details?

software outside the sandbox can access sandboxed resources, but sandboxed processes can not acccess outside the sandbox.

so whenever you run stuff sandboxed, documents etc, they will still appear in your 'recent documents' list,
also for firewall or other applications that need to grant or deny access to other applications will need to make a rule in the system to tell what to do.

So street bare with me here if you would please...

What you are saying is, I open an exe in the sandbox and my firewall, HIPS etc, comes up to ask if want to allow this, I say yes.

If it is a naughty exe, the allow I have given to the it via my HIPS will only apply for it to run in the sandbox?

When I empty the sandbox with the naughty exe in it, it wouldn't be able to run on my 'real' system as it is gone?

All the permissions I gave via my Online Armour will then have to be deleted, or privacy will be nil as anyone could see via the OA programs list what I have been downloading.

Have I got that all right now street?

that totaly depends on the HIPS program you're using, if the HIPS tracks the entire path of the file, any executable on the real system will be asked again.
but if it looks only to the exe's filename, any file with that name on the real system will be allowed by the HIPS software...

anyway, this is not something you can blame sandboxie for.

No way would I blame sandboxie, it was never about that!

I was just trying to understand sandboxie better, how it works.

I will continue to use it as I feel it is of value to me, and to anyone else for that matter.

If I have anymore questions may I ask?

Ofcourse you may ask!

i didn't want to blame you for blaming sandboxie :P just wanted to point out that not everything can be sandboxed :)
and some things are beyond sandboxie's control...

i'd advise you to read through the forum and FAQ, there's a lot discussion going on there.

any new questions or tips are welcome :)
