Actually I was thinking a little more about this. What version of Sandboxie are you using? I think I remember in 3.20 that SbieCtrl remained running on a domain computer even though it was basically disabled (you could view the license error details). Maybe this is changed in 3.20.01+ and now it just exits? I'm not sure as I haven't tried it on a domain PC, only a domain laptop which works ok now.

I'm using the latest 32-bit version (3.20.01).

I tested again on a domain pc at work here. SbieCtrl runs and shows the licensing error, after I exit SbieCtrl then the cleanup starts.

I don't have a Win2k system to test on, just XP. Have you successfully run your portable setup on a home PC (to verify your config)? If so, then I'm not sure what to suggest. The launcher didn't give you any errors, which means that you have admin rights, and the SbieCtrl executable was located.

If you run the launcher, can you watch the Task Manager and tell me if SbieCtrl is started or not (even if it exits immediately)? Additionaly are there any restrictions on your school PC that would prevent Sandboxie from running? Can you install programs/services/drivers?

Yes, it runs fine on my home pc (Window XP Home + SP2 + Patches, 32-bit, Athlon 64 3000+, 1GB RAM, Admin rights)
Additionaly are there any restrictions on your school PC that would prevent Sandboxie from running? Can you install programs/services/drivers?
I can install programs... I'm not sure about the other things but at least it should work (I'll try to find out about that).
If you run the launcher, can you watch the Task Manager and tell me if SbieCtrl is started or not (even if it exits immediately)?
I'll have a look at that the next time I have some free time at school (Should be somewhen next week).
I'll also try to run SB-Portable with an older version of SB.

Keep in mind that the current version of the launcher doesn't support Sandboxie versions older than 3.02.25. So you'll have to have the old version of the launcher laying around to give it a shot.

I have successfully installed SandboxiePortable.
Many thanks for yout efforts and kudos for the clever way it works :D .

I have one small issue left. Whenever I run SandboxiePortable it reads and writes to the registry key
HKCU\Software\tzuk.
That seems to be the only way that it knows not to come up with the new user screen.
Since I want to use this on other people's machines, I'd rather not write to registry.
I've found that running CrashCleanup after exiting removes the key, but then the next time I start SandBoxiePortable it assumes it is the first run.

Is there a way of telling it that it's not the first run in the .ini file?
Is there a way of ensuring it removes all its registry entries on exit?

Thanks for any advice.

That's a little puzzling. The newest versions of Sandboxie no longer write to that registry key, and all settings are stored in the INI. What versions of Sandboxie and the launcher are you using?

If you've upgraded from an older version of the launcher, try a fresh install to a new location and recreate your INI file through the GUI. You could also try deleting the Registry.reg file from your 'SandboxiePortable\Data\Registry' folder and running the launcher again. You'll also need to delete that key from your registry since the launcher no longer touches it.

See if that solves your problems.

I'm using sandboxie 3.02. I've been scared off trying 3.20 because it appears won't work if your computer is part of a local network (and since I've only just started using it I haven't registered yet) and the reason for putting it on a key is that I want to be able to use it at my son's home. He has three computers on a wireless network, I have only one.

I can live with it writing to the key, if that's the only problem and other wise it seems to work well.

Thanks

Ah ok, that version of Sandboxie does write to the reg key. So you're using launcher version 2.2.1.4 then? If so you shouldn't have a problem with Sandboxie asking about a first run each time, that setting shoud be saved.

Either way, there's no reason not to try out 3.20.xx. It is only restricted on DOMAIN PCs. This is NOT a home local network. If you don't know what a domain is, then you're not on one and you don't have to worry ;)

So give 3.20.xx a shot with the new version of the launcher. The GUI is nice. Since you're using the portable version, just install it to a different location and try it out. You won't hurt anything and you can always switch back. Just read my README carefully, since there are some changes you need to be aware of. You'll most likely want to start with a fresh INI file as well (the launcher will take care of that for you). Give it a try!

Also just to clear this up, even if he were on a Domain network, he should still be able to atleast try the program out starting with version... 3.20.01 I believe? SBIE9403.

Thanks for the advice.

I'm on a domain at work, but I don't want to use sandboxie there, for obvious reasons. I am ignorant about home networks, since I don't have one. If that does not imply being on a domain, I'll be happy to check out 3.20.

** UPDATED INSTALLER **

Updated to v1.0.0.5.

The installer can now (optionally) extract the Sandboxie program files from the Sandboxie installer and copy them to the SandboxiePortable installation folder. I hope this will again eliminate some confusion during the setup process.

How do i change the FileRootFolder to the location of the portable sandboxie application?

i want everything to stay on my usb drive, not on the pc's systemdrive, and on all systems my usb drive has a different driveletter so i cant just pick one...

i tried
FileRootPath=%Appdir%\Sandbox\%SANDBOX%
FileRootPath=%App%\Sandbox\%SANDBOX%
FileRootPath=..\Sandbox\%SANDBOX%
FileRootPath=Sandbox\%SANDBOX%

everything gives error.

Huh, looks like I forgot to put the special tokens in the README. Anyway,

%PortableDrive% = the drive letter of the device SandboxiePortable was launched from with a colon (no trailing blackslash), ie X:

%LaunchDir% = the SandboxiePortable.exe directory (no trailing backslash)

These are located in

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders

UPDATED - launch v2.3.0.4, installer v1.0.1.1

Post by wraithdu » Mon Dec 17, 2007 8:47 am

SandboxiePortable launcher and installer updated. SBP now uses the official Sandboxie installer. This makes SBP setup much simpler and usage of the Shell Integration features possible.

Please see the README for the new installation instructions.
