Problem: Outlook Fails to Start in New Sandbox!

Post by jclarkw » Wed Jul 09, 2014 1:54 pm

It appears this is no longer a "Quick Question," but please post any answers there anyhow:
http://forums.sandboxie.com/phpBB3/view ... 27#p102227

Further research indicates I am not be alone on this -- see http://forums.sandboxie.com/phpBB3/view ... tlook+2013 -- but I don't see any solutions posted out there. I bought Microsoft Office Home and Business 2013 pre-installed under Windows 7 SP1 on a new Lenovo ThinkPad W540. It appears to be a "click&run" installation, since it gets it's own updates somehow rather than updating through Microsoft Updates. (See also a test for click&run at http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/wind ... 7556b0fbf3.)

There must be a lot of us by now. Are we all just out of luck with sandboxing Office 2013 applications? A definitive answer would be appreciated, even if it's "Yes."

Thanks! -- jclarkw

Currently, Sbie does not work with Office click-to-run (a.k.a. App-V). It works fine with Office 2013 "classic" that installs everything on the user's machine. Freespace does work with App-V.

Is your other Outlook thread in reference to regular Office 2013 or App-V?

Curt -- Thanks for the clear answer.

The other post was written before I knew there was a click-to-run issue and applies to the same installation. Note, however, that

1) it may no longer be possible to obtain the "classic" Office 2013 suite-- see the post from MariusGold at the end of thread, http://forums.sandboxie.com/phpBB3/view ... tlook+2013, and

2) my copy of Office 2013 is by no means "cloud" software but came with an full-install DVD and runs fine without an Internet connection. The only difference I'm aware of (other than not starting under SandBoxie) is the way it gets its updates.

Perhaps you can very briefly explain the issue between SandoBoxie and click-to-run. Since I have recently purchased my first copy of Sandboxie Pro (thanks in part to your excellent tech support on my earlier issue), I have to hope that you will fix this problem someday. I don't know anything about FreeSpace, and I'm not inclined to spend more money replacing SandBoxie with an unknown.

Best Regards -- jclarkw

Click-to-run has a service that doesn't like running as anonymous login.

Not really your problem, but is there any chance of just stopping this service? If you can you tell me what its name is, I'll experiment... -- jclarkw

What would happen if Sandboxie fakes the user name and replaces "ANONYMOUS LOGON" with the real user name?

I've started exploring this click-to-run issue on Microsoft forums. Not getting a lot of detail so far, but according to a MVP Community Moderator at http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/offi ... 5387095079, "...as far as I know, the only place you can get the classic installer (otherwise referred to as the .msi installer) is from MSDN if you have a subscription."

This puts it out of the reach of most of us, both economically and technically, making it even more important that SandBoxie solve this problem. -- jclarkw

Does the following (from the same source mentioned above) sound plausible as a work-around?

"For what it's worth, App-V must also be disabled in order to be able to create/use VMware virtual machines so wonder if the answer to this problem isn't simply the case of turning off App-V (Hyper-V) on your machine (operative word in the sentence is "wonder")

Control Panel --> Programs --> Turn Windows features on or off --> Hyper-V

Make no mistake - the above is not a case of turning C2R on or off - have various configurations using C2R on virtual machines where Hyper-V has to be turned off for the reason noted above."

The service is appropriately named ClickToRunSvc. You can't just disable it because this is what downloads the updates in the background. And it is much more complicated than just renaming the user. There are lots of user permissions issues. The comments about Hyper-V are referring to the App-V server -- not the client. Click-to-run has to be allowed to download data, or Office will not work.

OK, thanks again. I'm still puzzled about how Office 2013 works in the absence of an Internet connection. Or is it just a login with credentials to the local computer that's being blocked by SandBoxie? Anyhow I hope your developers are working on the problem.

Note that the inability to separately sandbox Outlook essentially eliminates any advantage of the paid version of SandBoxie for me. Since all of this has apparently been solved in FreeSpace, however, maybe there's hope for a future release of SandBoxie... -- jclarkw

Curt -- I haven't been following this issue lately (see my old feature request at http://forums.sandboxie.com/phpBB3/view ... =4&t=19276), but is there any news? Surely if you guys can do it in FreeSpace, you can do it here... -- jclarkw

I have another app that installs with the click to run. The forum TOS prevents me from saying what I think about it. Grrr

I haven't checked back here for a while. I keep hoping: Has this problem been addressed in any new release of Sandboxie? -- jclarkw

Version 5.12

Released on 16 June 2016.

Microsoft Office 2013/2016/365 ClickToRun is now supported for paid users.
Haven't tested it (Click-to-run versions) myself but it looks like this might be what you wanted?

Thanks, Syrinx -- Looks promising. I will try it and report back. -- jclarkw
