Foxit Reader Is Not In List

Post by Liyin » Thu Mar 02, 2017 6:44 am

Foxit Reader is better known than over half of the list under Applications | PDF/Printing.

I can't print from Foxit Reader running on a sandbox.

Hello Liyin,

I downloaded Foxit and successfully printed a Firefox website to pdf.
Windows 10 x64 + SBIE 5.17.4

What happens when you try to print? And where are you printing from?
What are your OS, Antivirus and Sandboxie versions?

Regards,
Barb.-

Nothing happens. Once the message appeared to allow something, which I did and nothing happened.

Still trying to understand how permissions work.

Sandboxie 5.16
Windows 8.1
No anti-virus

Hello Liyin,

Can you please let us know exactly how are you reproducing the problem? Including what browser/application are you using to print to PDF.

Also, please provide the exact error message.
(If you accidentally hit "Hide" for the message, you can un-hide it by going to Configure---> Forget hidden messages).

Regards,
Barb.-

Hi Liyin, the reason Foxit doesn't appear under Applications | PDF/Printing is (at least till now), because Foxit has always worked great along Sandboxie. What you get when you tick an application under PDF/Printing are special settings from the Sandboxie side to make that application work better with Sandboxie. If you dont see an application like Foxit there, its because special settings are not needed to make Foxit work well in the sandbox or because this settings haven't been developed.

I have been using Foxit (portable version), for many years. Despite all the changes in Sandboxie over the years, I never experienced any kind of issue running or printing with Foxit in the sandboxed environment. I used Foxit in my now dead XP and my W7. Same experience. And never had to do anything special for it in order to print while sandboxed.

I wonder, were you able to print before and all of the sudden you cant print anymore? I think you should try printing using a new default settings sandbox. Perhaps your settings are messed up.

I've never printed using a sandboxed application before. Always used Sandboxie to test unknown applications and only now started to use it for normal apps.

What should I do to allow Foxit Reader to open and save (besides printing) files, only add a folder in File Permissions?

I'm using Foxit Reader v5, when you say portable is that from portableapps? Cause I have issues with shortcuts pinned to the taskbar with those apps ran from their launcher.

I'm not getting an error message, Sandboxie actually asked if I wanted to allow something (seemed like a good thing, can't remember what name it was), after allowing it nothing happened.

I'm in another computer, tomorrow will try again and let you know what happens (plus check hidden messages).

I run Foxit sandboxed 100% of the time (except for updating). Basically, I use Foxit in the sandbox identically as I would use it outside the sandbox. So, to open a PDF file in my computer, I click the PDF file and it runs automatically in its own dedicated sandbox. Thats how you do it with Sandboxies paid version. With the free version (your case, I think), there are different ways. One way would be to right click the PDF file and select Run sandboxed.

For the browser, I dont install any plugins and have it set to Always ask. So, when I am browsing when I click on a PDF, I get a dialogue box from the browser asking whether I want to Open or save the file. If I click Open, the PDF runs sandboxed out of the browser in the browser sandbox. If I click Save, the file gets saved to my downloads folder.

The only thing you have to do to save files (pdf or whatever) out of the sandbox is to make sure you add your download folders to the Quick recovery list in Sandbox settings>Recovery>Quick recovery. This are the folders where you'll be able to save and recover files via the Sandboxie interface. Myself, I also set the browser to recover to one of the Quick recovery folders. And untick Immediate recovery. I do this things to eliminate prompts.

For printing, I do absolutely nothing. I totally ignore the Sandboxie messages that I get when I click print, and continue to print. This might or might not be your case. It works different in different systems and computer.

You should create a new sandbox and without changing any settings or double clicking the Sandboxie message, see if the print goes through.

Sandboxie control>Sandbox>Create new sandbox

If the printing dont work, then double click on message 1320. I suggest you use a new sandbox because perhaps you being playing around with settings and something got messed up :).

Version 5 is very old. I was using 7 something which was old also but upgraded today after reading your post. You should upgrade. Here is the link to the new version I upgraded to if you like to try the portable.

The message you get from Sandboxie probably looks like the one I get. There you can see message 1320, thats the one you might need to double click in order to print.

I have a temperamental printer that turns itself on the next morning and prints the document, happened before and it wasn't with a sandboxed application (old Lexmark with Windows update driver).

I think that was the message and since it printed a day later it is probably something else.

I don't need to send PDF files to the sandbox, when I open a PDF file sandboxed Foxit Reader starts, but I want Foxit (and other sandboxed apps) to be able to modify these files located in different folders.

Would it better to use Resource Access\File Access vs Recovery in that case?

I don't have much experience with Sandboxie when it comes to interactions outside a sandbox.

I rather use Recovery and avoid using Resource Access\File Access as much as possible. Every time you use File access, you are opening a hole in the sandbox, thats why I rather use Recovery and it doesn't bother me at all to do recovery. But I also believe in not giving up usability and convenience for security. So, if you feel a lot more comfortable allowing File Access, then I say, do it.

Sandboxie interacting with applications outside the sandbox. For me personally, the way that works is one of the things I like best about Sandboxie. One word to describe it (for the most part) is seamless. Thats exactly how I feel about my regular every day usage of Sandboxie.
