The nag screen is a touch annoying

If it doesn't fit elsewhere, it goes here

Shareware = can become disabled/crippled after trial period, or begin nagging even if it doesn't break

There's plenty of software that has a registered version and a free but partially crippled version, which may include things like a nag screen with a timer before you can run the program. Those aren't freeware, they're more like demonstrations, inducements to buy the full version. Sandboxie is just like other shareware, you can test out the program for 30 days before it starts nagging, the trial version doesn't have all the features of the registered version. And like many others, you can continue using it past the trial period but there's a nag screen. Because you give permission to ignore the nag screen doesn't make it freeware.

Since there's no mention that it will begin nagging after 30 days, it's even more annoying.
Funny thing I just noticed. I did a google search on this site and also re-read the Sandboxie license. Nowhere on this site or in the license can I find any claim that Sandboxie is "freeware." There are several places where the software is described as free -- which it certainly is -- but arguing about definitions of "freeware" seems silly when Tzuk has not, as far as I can find, ever made that claim.

Now let's start ignoring the immature, cheap jerks who come here, make no contribution to help others, choose to use this great product free through Tzuk's generosity, and then want to stomp their feet and complain because someone they never met doesn't give them the product of his work without a gentle reminder about registering.

Such jerks don't deserve our time.

What's your point?

Where does Tzuk or this web site claim that Sandboxie is "freeware"?

This web site in several places describes the program as being "free," but it makes no claim anywhere to be "freeware," "nagware" -- or even "jerkware"!

This is just a stupid discussion.

There is advance disclosure on the home page as to whether someone who elects to install the program will be "encouraged" to register:
... If you find it makes your Web experience that much safer, you are encouraged to register the program for a small fee.
This appears directly below the home-page Sandboxie download link. Also, several alternative solutions are offered, for anyone who may be unhappy "for whatever reason" with Sandboxie. All this has been here on the home page for as long as I can recall.

So, you could make the case that anyone who downloads and uses the program has read and agrees to the quoted statement. I haven't seen any indication in this thread, from those who are unhappy, to their having read the above quote, or claiming it's inconsistent with the program's operation.

Value Conscious

Maybe $10, but not $25

Most of what I choose to download through donationcoder.com, majorgeeks.com, and tucows.com is software that wants $10 as a lifetime registration fee. I won't add arguments here why that may be a better price, and invite responses why this program is worth $25. I'm just saying I'd be willing to register for $10.

I would be willing to pay more than the $25 Tzuk has set as the price.

It's not just a matter of what the program is worth to various users. It's also a matter of the value Tzuk assigns to his time and intellectual efforts. In economics, we say that value reflects the price a willing seller offers to a willing buyer.

Most major security and privacy utilities that I use require annual licensing fees of from $39 to $69 ($US). A one-time fee of $25 for Sandboxie registration seems very generous to me -- especially since it can also be used for free with almost all of its functionality enabled if one is willing to endure the reminder screens after 30 days and prefers not to pay.

I doubt Tzuk is getting rich off of us.

. . . but all that's just one more user's opinion.

If lucky, a smoke detector is only worth a little peace of mind; yet its worth is potentially immeasurable in the event of fire.

Worth is subjective. The cost is well within fair market value; but if you don't feel the registered version is worth $25 to you, then don't register it.

If Tzuk removed the registration fee altogether, there would probably be a few whiners who would then complain that he is not paying them to use his program.

In fact, based on my usage of Sandboxie, I think Tzuk would already owe me several thousand dollars.
