Cannot Update Google Chrome Inside SBIE

Post by JohnBox » Tue Jul 21, 2015 6:26 am

Running Google Chrome in SBIE and opening chrome://chrome/ in the address bar will reap errors like : Update failed (error: 3)An error occurred while checking for updates: Update check failed to start (error code 3: 0x80080005 -- system level).

However I have allowed chrome.exe and GoogleUpdate.exe in my PFW and can see traffic on the GoogleUpdate.exe reaching Google servers on port 443 on IP 173.194.112.193, outgoing and incoming this is.

When running Chrome out of SBIE it updates just fine.

Thank you for any help. Perhaps I have the SBIE setting for the Chrome SBOX wrong?

Looking at the .ini file:

Code: Select all

[ChromeInstalled]

Enabled=y
ConfigLevel=7
Template=WindowsFontCache
Template=BlockPorts
Template=LingerPrograms
Template=Chrome_Phishing_DirectAccess
Template=Firefox_Phishing_DirectAccess
Template=AutoRecoverIgnore
BorderColor=#8000FF
NeverDelete=y
BoxNameTitle=n
LingerProcess=SandboxieBITS.exe
ForceProcess=chrome.exe

[Template_Local_Firefox_Latest_Portable_Force]

Tmpl.Title=#4323,Firefox
ForceProcess=firefoxlatestportable.exe
Tmpl.Class=Local
I see

Code: Select all

Tmpl.Title=#4323,Firefox
, though that has been removed long time ago IMO. I guess the settings are borked somehow.

I call this SBOX "ChromeInstalled" since I installed it into the sandbox and not onto the C:\ partition directly. Used to run Chrome Portable but removed that later on, same with Firefox Protable, so why the Chrome SBOX is using the

Code: Select all

[Template_Local_Firefox_Latest_Portable_Force]
is a riddle to me.

Again, thank you for any help, it is not urgent.

Best Regards

Hi John. Sandboxie wont allow a running sandboxed Chrome or Firefox to update.

Since you have Chrome installed in a sandbox, you might be able to update Chrome by running the new versions installer in the sandbox where you keep Chrome installed. I am pretty sure that would work with Firefox but not to sure about Chrome. But you can try it.

Thank you for your reply.

It did update after a couple of tries, while running, with a restart. Same for Firefox, not the portable version but the one installed into the SBOX.

What are those other settings in the INI file? I don't think I need a FF template in the Chrome SBOX, do I?

Will try and remove that SBOX and install it again.

I guess the browser can be updated when installed in the sandbox.

About the Firefox setting in the Chrome sandbox, you can get rid of it by unticking "Allow direct access to Firefox....phishing database" in Sandbox settings for the Chrome sandbox, Applications>Web browser>Firefox.

Though now it never updates no more.

What other settings could I tune in SBIE to get this working again.

Opera also updates within Sandbox.

Is it perhaps the "Never delete this Sandbox and its contents" setting that needs to be unticked?

The error: Update failed (error: 3)An error occurred while checking for updates: Update check failed to start (error code 3: 0x80080005 -- system level)
has occurred due to the Administrative privileges means your Google Updater were not running when you're running your Google Chrome, so you need first to go to your C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Google\Update.

In this directory you will see GoogleUpdate.exe and then you need to run it as administartor.

Then finally Launch your Google Chrome browser then try to update your chrome. It will start updating automatically.

The original solution is published here. :) :) :)

You should always update your browser (or any software run as sandboxed) outside of the sandbox first.
Update. Then confirm it was updated.
Delete the contents of your sandbox.
Run the updated program in that sandbox.
