Autodesk Inventor breaks Sandboxie [SOLVED]

Functionality of sandboxie breaks when I install Autodesk Inventor Pro 2017 x64 Trial outside Sandboxie.

Could you please let me know how I can fix this as I will need Inventor on this system as well as Sandboxie. The inventor trial can be downloaded from Autodesk's website.

System:
Windows 10 Pro x64, 1607, 14393.321. fully updated.
Sandboxie 5.14 64 bit (latest version)

Details:

After installing Inventor outside sandboxie...

I am unable run Windows File Explorer (eg, sandbox > context menu > run sandboxed > run windows explorer. The sandboxie support apps start, then there is a long wait, then briefly explorer.exe starts and then silently closes.

I am unable to run various applications inside any sandbox.

I am able to run notepad.exe inside a sandbox.

I am able to run cmd.exe inside a sandbox.

From that command prompt, when I try to run explorer.exe, I get an error message "Windows cannot find 'shell::{52205fd8-5dfb-447d-801a-d0b52f2e83e1}' Make sure you typed the name correctly and try again.

I am unable to run regedt32.exe from that command prompt or from Sandboxie directly.

Things I tried without success:
* Uninstall and reinstall Sandboxie.
* Uninstall various Inventor components, including vcredist installs (which naturally breaks Inventor).
* Searched for shell-error related google items and stuffed around with registry settings.
* Use SysInternals AutoRuns, and under "explorer" uncheck all add-ins related to Autodesk.
* Use SysInternals Process Explorer and try to compare what DLLs are loaded (I didn't do a thorough good job at that one..)
* Searched this forum but all these items are not resolved: http://forums.sandboxie.com/phpBB3/sear ... s=inventor

Basically, the only remedy is to run Windows Restore to get rid of the Inventor installation. I also can't install Inventor inside a Sandbox (Grrr).

I did a Windows restore and tried again, with the same result, so it's repeatable.

tried it with various sandoxes, including default.

Help would be greatly appreciated.

Well, I downloaded the 5+GB installer and was able to duplicate your issue. I have not, however, figured out why it is happening or come up with a workaround. There are a massive number of changes and I'm thinking about giving up on this one...

Thanks for looking at it. I retried and reproduced it on a virtual machine but haven't had time to solve it out either.

Is there a way you could debug-step-through sandboxie in your IDE to the point of failure and give me some info as to why it dies?

Alternatively, if you give me some info of what exactly happens when sandboxie tries to execute, say, regedt32.exe, then maybe I can dig around myself. Though admittedly, my skills are limited.

I'm not part of Invincea, just a user. I think the only reason Curt would hire me is so that he could turn around and fire me! :P

@Curt
I saw that thread but didn't think it was related to what we were seeing so I dismissed it.
After your pointing us back to it I figured I'd test it out anyway.

installed Inventor (and NetFX3)
uninstalled the VC2010 it adds (seemed cleaner/safer then manually deleting them) x86&x64 [salyx, you may want to avoid this step and try the original instructions of deleting those files]
installed SBIE (vc2010 didn't show up under programs and features after this but)
the issues seem to be resolved in my limited test...
Guess we just have to see if it works for Salyx on the real pc now.
Doh!

Sbie requires these DLL's: msvcr100.dll, mfc100u.dll, msvcp100.dll. You can manually delete these from \windows\system32 & windows\syswow64. Then rerun the Sbie install and it will restore these files.

Thanks for your continued support.

I had tried the suggestion in that post previously (though I uninstalled, not deleted the dlls) and it didn't help, but I tried again just now. Again no luck.

All on a Windows 10 x64 running in a Virtual Machine with Inventor installed outside Sandboxie.

Attempt 1:
1. Uninstall VC 2010 x64 and then x86 from Add Remove Programs
1.a This required me to stop the sandboxie service and autodesk simulation moldflow mitsi 2017 job manager service to avoid a reboot.
2. Run Sandboxie Installer > Override
3. Problem remains

Attempt 2:
1. Under System32, delete the 3 dlls. Made sure I picked the right ones.
2. Under SysWow64 delete the 3 dlls.
3. Run Sandboxie Installer > Override
4. Problem remains

Attempt 3:
1. Uninstall Sandboxie
2. Under System32, delete the 3 dlls.
3. Under SysWow64 delete the 3 dlls.
4. Reboot
5. Ensure the DLLs didn't magically return
6. Install Sandboxie
7. Problem remains

Since I'm running this in a VM, I'd be quite happy to go for a more aggressive "progressively delete files / registry settings" approach, if you give me some pointers.
I did trace the explorer.exe startup in sandboxie with SysInternals Process Explorer, but there is too much to digest and make sense of.

Very depressed now. Must find coffee..

Sorry to hear it didn't work for you. In my test case I didn't have Sandboxie installed first, just Autodesk inventor then did the uninstalls followed by installing Sandboxie the first time.

Are you using the combined installer for Sandboxie or one of the specific x86/x64 versions? I tested the one found here:
http://www.sandboxie.com/SandboxieInstall.exe

Unfortunately I didn't keep the inventor setup files as I actually expected it to work for you. I'll see if I can re-download it and test more variations within the next couple days but no promises! =( /cry

OK, got the installer and ran 2 tests so far.
Instead of uninstalling the vc++2010 autodesk installs I started using the update version found here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/downloa ... x?id=26999 and installing it over top. It was easier then deleting everything manually or worrying about if the SBIE installer might be involved. I did select ignore and do a reboot during the update as some AutoDesk stuff was using the files.

After the reboot I still had issues in sandboxie *until* I de-selected something that I noticed had been activated after AutoDesk was installed.
Menu > Configure > Software Compatibility > Unchecked Screen Readers: JAWS,(etc) and I was able to launch Explorer and IE sandboxed again.

I'll hold onto the VM & installer for a couple days so I can do more testing later if doing it that way instead doesn't fix your issue....

Switching off Screen Readers does the job!!!!
In my VM, I switched off JAWS, and now I can start Windows Explorer inside Sandboxie.
Will have a closer look the next few days when I have time and report back.

Ok. I can now confirm that the solution works. Tried on VM as well as real machine.

Summary:
Windows 10 Pro x64, fully patched.
Sandboxie 5.14 64 bit.
Installed Inventor 2017 Trial outside Sandboxie.

Symptoms:
* Unable to run Explorer inside Sandboxie
* Unable to run regedt32.exe inside Sandboxie
* Unable to start shortcuts / executables via rightclick inside Sandboxie
* When running cmd.exe inside Sandboxie and then trying to run Windows Explorer from there, getting mixed error messages about shell::{52205fd8-5dfb-447d-801a-d0b52f2e83e1} and "out of memory" etc.

Solution:
* Sandboxie > Menu > Configure > Software Compatibility
** Uncheck "Screen Readers: JAWS, NVDA, ..."
* Click OK

That's all. No need to fiddle with Visual C-runtime installs or anything else.

BIG THANK YOU to Syrinx for uncovering this mystery!

..still need a coffee, though. This time to celebrate.

Why were you using the JAWS template? I don't think it will work under any scenario any longer due to Windows changes E.g. opening epmapper no longer works. So, I am thinking about deleting it from templates.ini.

It was automatically selected/activated after installing AutoDesk Inventor. I assume the template scan detected something.

I will try this I ended up giving up and only running sandboxie on computers that did not require Inventor by Autodesk none of my testing worked.

I have a new PC and I have to use Inventor2018 it was one of teh first things installed (Win 10, then Office then Inventor). I now added sandboxie and it did not work again so I will try this fix, fingers crossed (so glad I was not the only one).

Somebody give that man a huge handshake!!!! That works to think it was so simple a fix (very hard to find I am sure) I spent days going back and forth with all those libraries.

I have sandboxie back YES!
