Estimated timeframe for Edge support [SOLVED]

Post by LoneGroover » Sun May 01, 2016 7:23 am

I appreciate this question is likely repeated endlessly but would an informed approximation of the expected time frame for Microsoft Edge support? Whilst mention within the forums is not uncommon, specifics alas are, most especially any inkling of when such support may materialize. Having happily used SandboxIE for what seems like an eternity now, I am loathe to traverse the rigors of the Interwebz without the added protection of SandboxIE which I have come to rely upon. With the advent of Microsoft Edge I perceive a modern browser which may be ideal for my needs, if only I could safely investigate its worth more thoroughly, secure in the knowledge that SandboxIE was at hand providing the dependable reassurance it has now for over a decade.

So please, a rough guestimate of when users might expect news of forthcoming Edge support? A ballpark figure to appease the unanswered question of when this technological triumph might be realized. Q2 2016? Q3 2016? The next millenium (one jests!)? I am not seeking a concrete assurance, and am aware that projected targets are notoriously fickle and unreliable, however a hint, a whisper, an insinuation, a fleeting echo in the dark would do much to provide assurance of Invincea`s continuing focus upon and commitment to this product.

This is no ETA.

Edge and Metro apps will take an incredible amount of work. With all the updates to Windows 10 and roll ups, it just haven't been a direct focus, but it's being worked on for sure.

We support dozens of other browsers and honestly, we haven't gotten many requests for Edge support. If a user forgets to set a default browser in Windows 10 other than Edge and they click on "run browser sandboxed" icon, SBIE will auto load IE11.

My main reason for enquiring about Edge was simply the performance I see from it in daily use on a variety of desktops. Of the major browsers (Chrome, Firefox, IE, Opera and now Edge) I observe considerably better performance from Edge than from the competition, quite possibly as Edge remains largely unburdened by excessive extensions and multiple "updates" and "hotfixes" from the developers themselves.

However if it remains a minority product then I well understand the time taken to support the product given the departure that it is from more traditional architecture. It would be nice to have but certainly not at the expense of the continuing support and functionality which SandboxIE provides for "dozens of other browsers" :D

As you say, there is an in-built safety net to catch the unwary and this will have to suffice for now.
