Why A Great Program, then THIS?

Post by 000 » Thu Apr 23, 2015 12:41 pm

Why does Tzuk insist on wrapping his hot program in a shi&&y icon? Fanboys, spare me the drivel of "the program is what counts" because you're missing the point that changing the icon takes zero effort. Some of us live on our computers and take pride in how beautiful our desktops are, yes, right down to the icons. There is no good reason to use a shi%%y icon that looks like some 2yr old drew in Paint via Win 3.11 in 1998. Is that what the 'brand loyalty' is? Your kid drew this icon and you've managed to convince yourself it's cool and retro? It's UGLY and looks like something from Lesiure Suit Larry.

"Change the Sandboxie Control icons and background

No, these visual elements make up the Sandboxie brand."

No, these visual elements take AWAY from the Sandboxie brand. They express the OPPOSITE of everything this software is. The OPPOSITE of cutting edge. The OPPOSITE of well coded and contemporary. Wake TF up! Imbed a slick icon and watch this program do even BETTER than it is now.

They say don't judge a book by its cover, but everyone does. That's why creating a cover is so important! I heard about SBIE years ago but saw the icon and never tried it because it looked so lame. And even now, after trying it, I DON'T WANT SUCH A SHI%%Y ICON IN MY SYS TRAY and I know I am not alone. I'll just use the free sandbox in Comodo free FW.

Wake up and smell the icon, brother.

ROFL. I once knew an English artist who wouldn't sell you a paining if you criticized his choice of frame. Not using Sandboxie because you don't like the icon's is foolish in my opinion, and you are the loser in that case. Oh well.

I'm one of those people right there with you about the icon, in fact I had brought it up again in a few of my posts recently. However complaining about it won't get you very far here as I learned when I first joined and started making mock up replacements. I haven't quite let it go myself and still tease peter about it once in a while but all in all it's a small price to see that thing ruin my otherwise pretty notification area considering what you can do with it. It certainly shouldn't keep you from making use of a program that you yourself have called 'great'.

Glad I'm not the only one that thinks the icons are ugly. I just make new icons using the standard icon for the application with a yellow box around it to indicate a sandboxed instance.

I even made changing icons part the beginner's guide I wrote up--just because the icons are so ugly and it's one of the first things I do with Sandboxie.

Have a look at my logo-proposal for Sandboxie.

I don't think what we think matters. The logo has become symbolic of SBIE, and I'd be surprise to see it change.

Actually I also kind of like the current one.

Thank You for your comments so far.
I appreciate your thoughts.

I don't think this is a trolling post.
The original poster has some good points.

Sandboxie is growing for a good reason and to mark that,
it has reached a point where it should be reworked.
The GUI and the logo are due for a redesign.

...but that is a marketing decision and better left to the professional.

Your post gives all the good reasons why nothing should be changed.

I speak from the experience of having my own business. As you might guess from my username, my name is Pete. I own a dog walking service here where I live. The name of the service is Davidsdogwalking. The name David was the previous owner. I often get asked why the name when my name is Pete. Some long time clients also ask me why I don't change it.

Three reasons. 1) out of respect to my friend David. 2) The name is established and has a reputation of quality service 3) Marketing. I have some current clients who had been clients when the business first started years ago. They moved away, and have years later returned and again needed our service. They only remembered one thing, the name. Had I changed it they never would have found it.

When Invincea took over Sandboxie, everyone was afraid that would spell the end of the program. To me the fact Invincea honored Tzuk and what he accomplished by not changing what he set up, showed me they were committed to carrying it forth, rather then killing.

That's why many long time users have the attitude towards new comers welcome to a great piece of software. If you don't like the logo, get over it.

Pete

Let me know what you think
ugly and none saying and in details wrong

sandboxie is written as SandboxIE - there are reasons for major letters nevertheless its abilities are more than sandboxing IE. the current logo points it out
http://sandboxie.com/img/MastheadLogo.jpg
same reason people write SBIE instead SB

if you dont understand the past you wont be able to change the future.

agree Pete - menkind is more able to recognize colors and signs instead some names or brands. the yellow diamond/rhombe is well known!
