MS Project 2016 frozen UI [SOLVED]

MS Project 2016 frozen UI [SOLVED]
I'm trying to run MS Project 2016 (click2run), but only have partial success.
I can't run it unless I run it as administrator first in the sandbox (I'm guessing this starts up some process in the background). I can open it with normal privileges afterwards.
Even when running as admin, the UI comes up but is completely unresponsive. I can use keyboard shortcuts to resize the window, but nothing on the UI works with the mouse. I have tried opening a plan from command line and it did open and got displayed, but can't do anything with it. I pressed CTRL+S to save, and it got saved (inside Sandboxie), so it seems that the program works, it's just the UI that is completely frozen.
I have tried Word 2016 and Excel 2016 and those worked fine without issues. One thing worth noting is that I see Skype for Business starting up briefly when I try to start any of these programs.
OS: Windows 10 pro 64 bit
SBIE: 5.22 (64 bit, registered)
AV: Sophos Endpoint
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Gergely

Re: MS Project 2016 frozen UI
Hello BandiG,
I downloaded and tested Project Professional 2016 + Win 10 x 64 and experienced no issues launching it.
Before opening it sandboxed, be sure to log in to MS Office via Project on your host.
Are you receiving any error messages?
Does the issue follow you to a new sandbox with default settings?
Does Project work fine on the host?
Are there any addons involved?
Regards,
Barb.-

Re: MS Project 2016 frozen UI
Hello Barb,
Thanks for checking this.
There are no error messages at all.
I have checked and I did have a TFS addin that I haven't used, so I have removed it. I have noticed afterwards that it now starts without having to do the elevated permissions the first time.
However the UI is still frozen. I have disabled the Skype for Business integration as well (as I haven't been using that either), but that also changed nothing. One thing to note is that I can't see recent projects or templates in the MS Project window.
Project works fine on the host, and I am logged in with my office account (visible even when running under SBIE).
I have taken a screenshot from when Project is started under Sandboxie: https://cl.ly/1B0H3u0h0O0N
I have also tested with a new sandbox with default settings and exactly the same thing happens again.
In the running applications in Sandboxie, I only see three Sandboxie processes and winproject.exe.
I just noticed that lync.exe appears repeatedly, like it is trying to start up but can't. Maybe this is the reason why Project is frozen. I have tried to run it manually (both with normal and elevated privileges) and it does not start in Sandboxie. Since it is trying again and again, I think it's likely this is the main reason. Any ideas how I could get that running?
Thanks,
Gergely
MERGED POST ----------------
So when I try to start Skype for Business 2016 (lync.exe) elevated, I get this error:
SBIE2224 Sandboxed program has crashed: lync.exe [DefaultBox]
Lync was not running on the host at this time (nor anything that would use it), but it works fine on the host and I regularly use it.

Hello BandiG ,
Lync.exe (Skype For Business) does not work in Sandboxie, so that is probably what's triggering the problem. I don't think it has ever worked (More info here: viewtopic.php?f=11&t=22645 )
Can you try disabling it and see if the issue persists?
Regards,
Barb.-

Re: MS Project 2016 frozen UI
Hi Barb,
OK, I've managed to disable the SfB integration using the method described here: https://www.mpug.com/articles/hidden-fe ... ject-2016/
I've deleted the contents of the sandbox, but still Project wouldn't start. I've noted that it no longer tries to start Lync.exe. I have confirmed on the host that it indeed does not try to start it with sysinternals procmon.
I went even further and uninstalled Skype for Business from the host (and deleted sandbox contents again), but Project still got frozen after starting. I have tried running procmon in SBIE but that seems not possible. I have also tried event viewer in SBIE but that also does not show the events. Any idea how I could get some logs to figure out why the project UI gets locked up? If lync played a part in this issue, that seems no longer to be the case.
Thanks,
Gergely

Re: MS Project 2016 frozen UI
Hello BandiG,
Do other Office products, or programs in general, run fine in Sandboxie?
Can you disable your AV protection and re-try ?
Please post your Sandboxie Configuration file:
Configure--> Edit Configuration
Copy/paste the contents in your response.
Highlight the contents and hit the "</>" button to format them.
Regarding logs, create a new Sandbox with default settings, then follow these steps:
https://www.sandboxie.com/ResourceAccessMonitor
Copy/paste the contents in your response.
Highlight the contents and hit the "</>" button to format them.
For procmon, you need to run it outside Sandboxie to capture the events. But, let's start with the things I suggested above, and go from there.

» Do other Office products, or programs in general, run fine in Sandboxie?
Yes, Word and Excel work fine, though Word had an error saying that registry access was denied, but I believe that is because of a custom addin, and it worked otherwise.
» Can you disable your AV protection and re-try ?
Unfortunately, this is the one thing I have no access to on this computer. If it becomes the likely source of the issue, I can request programs to be added to the exclusion list. As a reminder, I have Sophos Endpoint installed.

Re: MS Project 2016 frozen UI
Hello BandiG,
I installed Project 2016 on a VM with Win 10 FCU + Sophos Endpoint Advanced 11.5.9 + Sbie 5.22 and still did not experience any issues with the UI.
Can you provide more information regarding how are you reproducing the problem?
Also, give this a try:
Open Project outside Sbie
Go to File --> Options
At the bottom of the General options uncheck "Start options ---> Show the start screen when this application starts"
Delete the contents of your Sandbox.
Re-try launching Project Sandboxed.
If it still fails, try creating a new Sandbox with default settings.
Are there any other specific settings that you may be using for Project?
Regards,
Barb.-

Re: MS Project 2016 frozen UI
Hi Barb,
I've already disabled the start screen in case the issue was caused by either the recent items or the templates. And I always either create a brand new sandbox or delete contents to make sure any setting changes are picked up.
I'm not aware of having any setting that would affect anything other than how projects are calculated. No external dependency or plugin or anything, really.
I can think of a few possible external factors that might be at play:
1. Recent projects include ones on network drives (though I don't think this should break it). In fact this is why I would like to use SBIE to not affect any dependent network projects.
2. My office account has three connected services, OneDrive personal, OneDrive business and SharePoint. The reason why I fail to see how this would affect anything is that Word opens, and it is associated with the same account, and it has the same connected services.
3. I just recalled (and searched back the records) that Project does not have a C2R installer by default. I had some C2R Office products on my computer (e.g.SfB), so I had to download the Office 2016 deployment tool and create an xml configuration to install Project 2016 Std Retail. Then I had to activate it with a key (rather than my account). Maybe the project you tested wasn't the C2R version then, and maybe the key activation check is causing issues.
I realise that my config is unusual and as you have managed to install and run the vanilla version of Project, I'm not expecting you to try and troubleshoot obscure scenarios. If you have any potential things I could try, I would wellcome that, but otherwise I'll just trudge along trying to fix on my own and will post the solution here if I find it.
Thanks,
Gergely
Update:
I have tried running ProcessMonitor to see if I can isolate where it goes wrong. What I see is that it loads all the settings as expected, then goes to DWM (I assuming bringing up the UI), then gets bogged down on some cryptsvc. After this point, winproj only queries cryptsvc and DigitalPersona.
When it seems to finish normal operation:
Later on only these DigitalPersona queries:
SandboxieCrypto runs along with these entries.
I think some of these might not be initiated by Project as it seems like it's iterating through some hooks. Programs that respond then are Roboform, Dell Data Protection (I don't use this to encrypt my drive, only to be able to use the fingerprint scanner to log on to windows 10 without pin), AdGuard. I have disabled AdGuard and Roboform just in case, but no change.
I can also see Office's UcMapi.exe looking up some certificates, I think this is related to my office account, and maybe lync. Note that Lync does not attempt to start, so this is probably not problematic.

Re: MS Project 2016 frozen UI
Hello BandiG,
I am using Project 2016 C2R, with a key (which was enabled outside Sandboxie).
It will take me a bit to review your scenario, and I may not be able to fully replicate it. But, once I get a chance to further test it I will let you know the outcome. Unfortunately, Project is not one of the typical MS Office applications that we support, but I'll see what we can do.
In the meantime, you can try giving Sandboxie direct access to your Network Drives to see if that helps. Here's a post I wrote for another user, that should help you:

Re: MS Project 2016 frozen UI
Hi Barb,
I've tried giving direct access to the network drives but that made no difference.
I've noticed in the task manager that project and dwm use the CPU constantly 20% each. Not sure if this helps with your investigation.
Thanks,
Gergely

Re: MS Project 2016 frozen UI
Hello BandiG ,
I tried to re-test this today and I am now encountering the same issue you are reporting:
Upon launch, Project 2016 freezes.
See if this works for you:
Right-click on your Sandbox --> Sandbox settings
Appearance
Check "Don't show Sandboxie indicator in the window title".
Ok your way out.
Delete the contents of your Sandbox
Re-try launching Project.
Regards,
Barb.-

Hi Barb,
That was it, thank you! Now it works like a charm.
