KB4058258/KB4074588 -Win 10 FCU x86 --dllhost.exe / sbiedll.dll initialization fail [Fixed in beta 5.23.6]

Post by VitsKip » Sat Feb 10, 2018 11:59 am

Receive today pop-up error box:

Header:
dllhost.exe - DLL Initialization Failed

Content:
Initialization of the dynamic link library C:\Program Files\Sandboxie\SbieDll.dll failed. The process is terminating abnormally.

I suspect this possible is caused by a windows update, flash player update, antivirus update or similar as Sandboxie have been working for many years without any problems.

My OS is Windows 10 Pro and I use Avast antivirus.

I have tried disable Avast and have also installed newest Sandboxie Beta 5.23.5

The error box appear every time Sandboxie / a program needs to use dllhost.exe

Any advice ?

Hello VitsKip ,

Are you using any restrictions (especially anything blocking program for starting in the sandbox)?
Have a look at this thread:
viewtopic.php?f=17&t=24994&hilit=dllhost.exe

Otherwise, please let us know if the issue follows you to a new Sandbox with default settings.

No restrictions at all.

The problem appeared out of nowhere using official release of sandboxie for many years.
I have tried doing full removal of sandboxie and installed beta 5.23.5 with all settings default (all programs should be allowed to both access the internet as well as start and run)

I can run all kinds of programs sandboxed, but as soon as any of them need to use dllhost.exe the error box pops up (often need to close the box many times) and then programs continue to run)

I dont have any special programs on my PC other than fully updated windows defender, Avast free antivirus and spybot search & destroy.

I suspect a recent update (windows, flash player, java or similar ?) may be the cause but of course I can't rule out other possible causes like if something have happened to my windows installation ?

Hello VitsKip,

I found another thread that might help you:
viewtopic.php?f=11&t=22347

If the issue persists, try removing your security software. If no difference, please provide the results of running Res. Acc. Monitor, as well as a copy of your configuration file.
Resource Access Monitor:
https://www.sandboxie.com/ResourceAccessMonitor
Copy/paste the output.
Highlight it and click on the "</>" button to format it in the forums.

Config File:
Configure --> Edit configuration
Copy/paste contents
Highlight contents and click on the "</>" button to format it in the forums.

Also, please provide the exact repro steps so that I can test this.

Easiest way to reproduce is to rightclick on wmedia player and make it run in Sandboxie as media player apparently is trying to use dllhost.exe. Any other program that try to use dllhost.exe will produce same result but we all have media player :-)

The same problem appeared after last update KB4058258 (maybe it is a problem, maybe not):

Hasuki,

I was able to reproduce using KB4058258. I confirmed that removing that KB allows Sbie to work.
I have made the devs aware.

VitsKip,

Can you verify if you also have that KB installed, and that you are using a 32 bit version of Windows 10?

Barb.-

Yes I am using Windows 10 Pro 32 bit and indeed KB4058258 was installed on my PC on february 9.

I have just removed KB4058258 and can confirm that Sandboxie now again works without any problems.

Thnx for identifying the cause so fast.

Will there be a patch to allow KB4058258 to operate?

Hello Hasuki,

Thanks for the update.
That KB is a security update and does not change the behavior (you would still receive the error). This issue is still under investigation.

In my case, it was KB4074588 that had to be uninstalled in order to eliminate the dllhost.exe error message.

UPDATE ---

Looks like KB4074588 is an update to KB4058258. If I install KB4074588 , KB4058258 disappears from my installed list.
Upon removal and a reboot, x258 comes back, and the issue persists.

I manually removed KB4058258 (after 588 was gone), and the issue resolved. I then ran a Windows update, which only installed KB4074588 and the issue came back. So looks like if you do an update now, you get KB4074588 which will also trigger the issue due to the above explained (and explains why I did not see a difference when I manually got both).

Hello TimRude,

Thanks for the update. I will re-test and update this thread soon.

Barb.-

Is a fix for this issue in progress? I am experiencing the sbiedll.dll initialization fail on both 5.23 and 5.22 Sandboxie versions, and uninstalling the x588 update also only temporarily resolves the issue.

Hello,

I also get this initialization fail when I want to start my Firefox (portable).

I tried to deinstall KB40745588, and now it works again.

But I feel no good to deinstall this update. Is there a solution soon?

Christian
