Installing Chrome fails

Post by LoluJaafJofe » Tue Apr 11, 2017 6:55 am

I'm using the offline 64bit installer:

https://www.google.com/chrome/browser/t ... ultbrowser

and receive the following error from Sandboxie:

SBIE2101 Object name not found: , error OpenProcess (C0000022) access=001FFFFF initialized=1
SBIE2101 Object name not found: , error OpenProcess (C0000022) access=001FFFFF initialized=1

Hi, it's been nearly 5 months since this Chrome issue was reported. Any progress on an internal fix? I'm fine using the workaround, but just curious as to if any of the devs have discovered something.

Clean install of Chrome inside the sandbox

Post by pipppero2007 » Tue May 30, 2017 11:02 am

Hello,

Win 10 and latest Sandboxie.

The host doens't have Chrome installed at all, I need to install Chrome INSIDE the Sandbox.

I absolutely don't want to install it outside the sandbox and then run it sandboxed. I want everything inside.

With 7 and maybe 8.1 is still possible. In 10 I have issues. This problem will be fixed or it's already fixed or there is a workaround (the "--sandbox" trick is ok only for the an older installation but not for the newer).

Hello pipppero200,

I have moved your post here, as we have a dedicated thread about installing browsers in the Sandbox.

What are the issues that you are encountering?

Have you tried this?:

Hello,

I followed these steps in march with my win10 without luck. :(
Other users did the same with the same result. :(

BTW, when I'll back to my computer with Win10 I will try to do those steps again.

Hello pipppero2007,

I just re-tried the steps on Windows 10 x64 CU + latest Sandboxie beta and was able to install Chrome and then run i using the -no-sandbox flag.
You have to check the "Run as UAC administrator" box when you drag the installation file to the desired Sandbox.
I am not sure why does this make a difference, but skipping that step returns the error message posted before.

Let me know how it goes.

Why is it so hard to Sandbox Chrome?

Post by stisev » Mon Jun 26, 2017 12:57 pm

v5.20 Sandboxie Windows 10 x64, fully updated.

Why is it so hard to install and run Chrome in Sandboxie? Chromium Portable (Pepperflash & Gifv problems with dev versions). Chrome Portable sucks (can't migrate extension + other settings due to google design) which leaves Chrome in Sandbox.

What is the PROPER procedure and sandbox settings to get Chrome to work? I am a registered user, so I have fully featured sandboxie.

Hi Barb, it worked, but this is a really, really horrible workaround - here's why:

In order to use sandboxed chrome as default browser, I use the following AHK (autohotkey) script someone on the net coded to pass info to registry and then use the default programs to associate that browser as default. The problem comes about when passing command line arguments. I want to include the following command line arguments > --no-sandbox --test-type < don't see any way to.

Is there any other workaround for this? (I already know about having Chrome open already - that's not a viable workaround).
Disabling Chrome's internal sandboxing is really not ideal, but having Sandboxie's sandboxing is nice. I wish they could both work together.

Here's the AHK script. Please help!

Code: Select all

; DefaultBrowserInRegistry.ahk
; http://www.autohotkey.com/board/topic/89803-set-default-browser-in-registry-correctly-handles-url-files/
;
; If no command line arguments will show GUI. Will run in silent mode if argument passed to it on command line.
; Silent mode example: DefaultBrowserInRegistry.exe "D:\PortableApps\GoogleChromePortable\GoogleChromePortable.exe"

#SingleInstance, Force
#NoTrayIcon

; Check for Command line Parameters
If(%0%) { ;If command line parameter
	BrowserEXEPath = %1% ; Get the first parameter
	Goto, LabelCheckPath
}

InputBox, BrowserEXEPath, Set Default Browser In Registry, Type the full path to the location of your Portable Browser EXE (without quotes)`, example: D:\PortableApps\GoogleChromePortable\GoogleChromePortable.exe, , 600

if (ErrorLevel) {
	;MsgBox Cancelled, Nothing written to registry.
	ExitApp
} else {
	Goto, LabelCheckPath
}

;---------------------------------------------------------------
LabelCheckPath:
SplitPath, BrowserEXEPath, , , ExtensionCheck, BrowserEXEName
If (ExtensionCheck <> "exe") {
	MsgBox, ,DefaultBrowserInRegistry ERROR, Does not seem like correct path, could not correctly find EXE extension.`n`nDEBUG REPORT`nBrowserEXEPath is %BrowserEXEPath%`nBrowserEXEName is %BrowserEXEName%`nExtensionCheck is %ExtensionCheck%

UPDATE:
OK, after spending hours with this, I was able to manipulate the AHK script to pass on the command line parameters and it works now.

Two more (albeit minor) problems that are annoying:

1) Cannot drag the address bar entries to desktop to save bookmark. PIC: http://i.imgur.com/l8NLX80.png Normally in chrome unsandboxed you can click, drag that (i) button to desktop and it works.

2) Cannot get volumouse to work within sandboxie window even after using tzuk's volumouse workaround (?)
I can confirm the following Application Template (NirSoft VoluMouse) is active.

I tried putting a " * " in the Window Access (OpenWinClass) window but it didn't work. PIC: http://i.imgur.com/lBrb75c.png

Code: Select all

[Template_Volumouse]
Tmpl.Title=NirSoft Volumouse
Tmpl.Class=Desktop
Tmpl.Url=http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/volumouse.html
Tmpl.Scan=w
OpenWinClass=NirSoft_VolumouseMsg*

Here's the Resource Access log for #1:

Hi stisev,

1) Please see: viewtopic.php?f=11&t=24375

2) If this is not related to installing a browser inside Sandboxie, we probably should create a separate problem report.
Please see the below link and create a new thread with the required information, and please add the resource access monitor log as well :
viewtopic.php?f=11&t=19746

Also, adding "*" is currently causing BSOD issues, we only recommend to use it for testing purposes.

Hi Barb
1) Thank you. It's definitely a less-than-stellar workaround, but I suppose it will work.

2) I am thinking Volumouse isn't working because of this:
http://i.imgur.com/4kvl4UF.png

By its very nature SBIE runs the process in untrusted. I have UAC *COMPLETELY* disabled (yes, completely, not just dragging the slider down) using the EnableLUA=1 method. This shouldn't be an issue, but it is.

EDIT: Confirmed. the issue occurs in other sandboxes (not just chrome).

Hi Barb, thanks for this. Have come across this issue with Chrome and Windows 10, and checking "Run as UAC administrator" is certainly needed for it to directly install in the sandbox in the first place. Have no idea why either, but it would be nice if the devs could comment on this. Also I think the full "offline installer" is required (for Windows 10), while in Windows 7, I seem to be able to smoothly install directly into a sandbox with the online installer.

Unfortunately I've noticed some other errors popping up, and still trying to isolate the reasons why before I make a problem report. It's hard to always reproduce at the moment, but I'll make further posts if I come across anything concrete. Certainly the issues are all related to Windows 10, as I've been running Chrome inside Sandboxie on Windows 7 for two years with little trouble.

Just a quick update with running Chrome directly installed inside a sandbox on Windows 10. I think when the device is in standby (and Chrome is running), that's when the errors start spitting out (including "Error in GUI server" ones). It's not easy to reproduce, hence why I haven't given exact steps, but I'm quite certain it's related to when the device is in standby mode. I've since disabled standby (via Windows registry) and haven't noticed a single error. Didn't like standby anyway haha.

If anyone has noticed Sandboxie spitting out errors with Chrome directly installed in their sandbox on Windows 10, would be keen to hear the experience.
