firefox portable not using direct access config [SOLVED]

Post by darchon » Fri Dec 15, 2017 5:59 pm

i use firefox portable and have setup direct access to E:\program files\firefoxportable* where all my instances of firefoxportable reside. the weird thing is i have about 20+ instances in different directories (E:\program files\firefoxportable1, E:\program files\firefoxportable2...) but for some reason E:\program files\firefoxportable19 refuses to use direct access to read and write to its directory and upon startup, the quick recovery window appears every single time i start it up. no other instance has this problem. and when i rename E:\program files\firefoxportable19 to say E:\program files\firefoxportable1900, it works perfectly. so something must be wrong with my config that seems to exclude E:\program files\firefoxportable19 and not any other E:\program files\firefoxportable*.

here's my config file, can anyone find a problem with it?

Hello darchon ,

What are you Antivirus, OS and Sandboxie versions?
Have you tried creating a new Sandbox with default settings + E:\program files\firefoxportable* direct access to see if that works for your 19th instance?

Maybe that particular instance is saving its data to a different location?

Barb.-

Hello darchon,
spoke too soon, i reset the settings and added it again like you suggested but it didn't work.
So you created a new Sandbox with default settings, and then added just E:... direct access, and you are still receiving an Auto-recovery window when launching the app?
Do the other Firefox instances work fine? Maybe there's an addon involved?
Where is it trying to recover the files to?

Barb.-

yes i created a new sandbox with default settings, added E:\Program Files to Direct Access and also Quick Recovery so that the popup will appear when a sandboxed browser cannot direct access files. then when i start E:\Program Files\FirefoxPortable19\FirefoxPortable.exe, the Quick Recovery window popups up and shows it is attempting to write to E:\Program Files\FirefoxPortable19. this does not happen to the other instances and they open fine without triggering Quick Recovery and when i do go into it, it only shows a single file inside eg E:\Program Files\FirefoxPortable18\Data\settings\FirefoxPortablesettings.ini and nothing else.

you mention maybe there's an addon doing this, but i mentioned that if i rename the folder to eg E:\Program Files\FirefoxPortable190 then everything works as expected. for some reason its just E:\Program Files\FirefoxPortable19 that seems to be cursed.

Hello darchon,

I am not able to reproduce the issue with Firefox Protable and Direct Access.
From the picture that you posted, it seems that Firefox may be trying to update. Could that be the case? If so, you need to do that outside Sandboxie.

If you make a copy of one of the instances that do work (say, FirefoxPortable10), and then rename it to FirefoxPortable19... Does it work?
How are your instances configured? Are you using multiple profiles?
What is different about your instance 19?

it was trying to update for some reason but i did what you suggested and wiped out 19, then copied from another instance over to 19 and reran, and it STILL won't follow Direct Access rules! i'm at wit's end. are there logs that sandboxie creates?

Hello darchon,

What is the Full path of the location ( s) that the files are showing when you are presented with Quick Recovery message?

now the 4th instance has started misbehaving out of the blue. it refuses to access direct access and is causing Quick Recovery to explode...

i tried the latest beta 5.23.3, same result...

have attached the view from quick recovery.

i don't know what's going on with sandboxie, its so unstable now.

Hello darchon,

What is the full path ? Program Files where? Perhaps is pointing somewhere else. (A different Program Files folder, I noticed you have multiple drives, that's why I am asking this).

Also, again, it looks as if it is trying to update. That is something you need to do outside the Sandbox, then delete the contents of sbie prior to re-launching the app.

you were right, it was attempting to update itself. even when i i set it to not check updates it was seemingly attempting to update itself. so i launched it outside of the sandbox and set it to never update, and relaunched it several times to make sure the option stuck. then i made sure the sandbox contents were deleted. and hallelujah, it worked. did it for 19 and its now behaving as it should!

thanks again for your patience.
