Does and can SBIE4 protect against win32k.sys vulnerability?

Hello, everybody.
I have one question that tortures me for some time.
Big thank you to chris1341 and Malwar for the following informations.
Here it is:

s far as I know, the exploit is win32k.sys-is it true that Google Chrome protects against this exploit, and SBIE4 does not protect against win32k.sys?
Ok, I know that this most likely patched long time ago, but I am asking you this, because I was told that win32k.sys is an exploit does not need to start/run, and that's why it is able to bypass SBIE4 protection?

Here is my configuration in SBIE4:
ClosedFilePath=%Personal%\My Downloads\(block your personal info from malware)

As you can see I blocked those vulnerable dlls, and also I blocked win32k.sys, but from what I've heard is that win32k.sys bypassses SBIE4 because the only attacks that beat SBIE3 and 4 are kernel-level exploits (that do not require to start/run/execute), but these same exploits beat Google Chrome as well.'' They beat Chrome but it can be patched unlike SBIE which cannot be patched against wins32k.sys exploito_O

I don't know if SBIE can fix this bypass or not, but I'm wondering if Google Chrome can be patched to protect against all kinds of exploits (including kernel-level exploits that do not need to start/run).

Also, keep in mind that if the following is true that we're looking at a handful at most changes in SBIE and 980 CVEs in Chrome in the last 5 years. That's because they do different things.

I can't remember an ITW Chrome specific exploit but seem to remember some plug-ins were exploited because they run at higher integrity. I can think of 2 POCs that Tzuk issued security fixes for. What he was doing in the background regularly we'll never know.
Chrome had many fixes for security so was vulnerable to those attack vectors but how many were being used in actual exploits I'm not sure.
For it seems the only answer to this question is how many exploits (including kernel-level exploits that do not need to start/run) can Chrome block and be patched to protect against and against how many exploits (including kernel-level exploits that do not need to start/run) SBIE4 can be patched to protect against?

This is why I decided to do what I think it's the best for me: I use SBIE4 for Mozilla Firefox and for Internet Explorer, but I do not use SBIE4 with Google Chrome, I use Chrome unsandboxed.
Is it true that no matter how tight you configure sbie 3 or 4 it can be bypassed by the win32k.sys exploit-the reason SBIE can not block win32k.sys is because win32k.sys does not need anything to run to access the kernel-is this true?

However like Rasheed said it would be interesting to see how many attacks Chrome would be able to block compared to all other web-browsers and SBIE.

The reason Chrome does not have the start/run restrictions of sandboxie is because it does not need them because it has no read/write to the file system. Chrome protects against drive-by malware-what about SBiE?

I will clarify a few things. kernel32.dll is always called kernel32.dll -- even in 64 bit Windows. It is always loaded into every Windows app. win32k.sys is a Windows kernel driver. It contains the kernel side of the Windows session manager (you can look these up in wikipedia for more information). Your ClosedFilePath settings in sandboxie.ini have no effect. You can't block a driver with ClosedFilePath.

So, what you're saying is that if operating system is not patched, this win32k.sys cannot be protected by SBIE?
Than how can Chrome protect against win32k.sys vulnerability (yes I know it is patched, but what happens in the case if it is not patched), and SBIE can't?
Sure Chrome had far more vulnerabilities than SBIE and it needed to be patched much, much more than SBIE, but it truly depends how much Chrome and SBIE can be patched and than protect against all kinds of vulnerabilities, it seems to me that Chrome is in advantage over SBIE in that area (so far from what I know about both SBIE and Chrome), that's all, big thanks anyway.

However, all this does not change my trust into Invincea and SBIE, I always prefer SBIE over Chrome, but that's just me, I can't talk about for others, although I can see many users of SBIE, if not all of them, will fully agree with me.

I'm bringing this back up because there is still some confusion in various forums.

The particular win32k.sys kernel exploit that Lumberjack is referring to is known as the TrueType Font vulnerability (https://technet.microsoft.com/library/security/ms11-087). The reason that Chrome was not affected by this is because Chrome had their own font parsing library from several years earlier (https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issu ... ?id=146254) that rejected these malformed fonts. So, their code never ran into the vulnerability. And from what I can tell from Chrome's writeup, it looks like Firefox also used the Chrome library so they never hit the bug either.

By the time this bug was made public, the problem had been fixed by Microsoft and a patch released. What our competitor did for their report was to use an unpatched version of Windows. Effectively, they exploited a kernel bug that no longer existed.

So you cannot say that "Chrome can protect against a kernel vulnerability but Sandboxie can't". It just so happens that in this case, they never hit the vulnerability.

Interesting Curt!

From a quick look at that Chrome link, it sounds like they're referring to a library checking/validating fonts before finally passing them to Windows...? :? From your post initially, I thought they were completely "handling" fonts themselves (whatever that entails).

If just checking before passing to Windows, I wonder if this catches ANY sort of malformed fonts? (I'm not sure how it could, else Windows could/would be perfect?) Of course if it's a complete implementation, it wouldn't be affected by the same vulnerabilities as Windows' kernel, but other possible ones (but just in user-mode).

When I thought I wouldn't have XP updates any longer, I was thinking I'd have to disable custom font downloads in Firefox to avoid these recurring font problems, but it seems that might not be necessary! Of course not an issue for myself now with the continued XP Embedded updates, but still curious for myself and others!

In what way SBIE3 and 4 beat Google Chrome when it comes to security and protection?

Chrome's sandbox is indeed a strong security solution (especially with --safe-plugins), but not against all types of threats. You can't compare it to Sandboxie for example.
Chrome's sandboxing is very strong against exploits and drive-by downloads, but not against ordinary malware (trojans etc.) and phishing threats. Microsoft's SmartScreen filter is unmatched in that area.
That is why I have always hoped that Internet Explorer 9 would feature the same sandboxing techniques as Chrome does, however IE9 only partially sandboxes. Since the combination of Chrome's sandboxing and Microsoft's SmartScreen filter would be unbeatable. Combine that perfect browser with built-in security measures (Windows Firewall, operating system hardening with assistance from EMET), backup and a system image and an on-demand scanner (Hitman Pro is the perfect candidate) and you have have bulletproof protection."

So, I have just one question right now:
Is this all really true about Google Chrome and how hard is to exploit it?
Is SBiE4 that you are now working on so tough (you said nothing has been exploited while and independent security company tested SBIE4's code-whatever that means)?
Is SBIE4 right now equally tough to exploits and drive-by downloads as Google Chrome 37 and was it before the version 4 came out?
What can you tell right now about SBIE4 security and protection when you compare it with Google Chrome 37?

It looks like that all those vulnerabilities of Google Chrome are totally useless when it to vulnerabilities from this website-http://web.nvd.nist.gov/view/vuln/searc ... ll&cves=on, because none knows how to exploit any of those Google Chrome's vulnerabilities.

So what is the story with SBIE4 when it comes to all of these mentioned questions?

The largest and most important difference between Chrome sandbox and Sandboxie is Sandboxie is designed to protect any application. Chrome sandbox only protects applications running under Chrome. If you download an executable in Chrome (webmail attachment, installer, etc.) and execute it, it runs outside the Chrome sandbox.

Another major difference is that Sandboxie uses a kernel mode driver combined with user-mode hooks. Chrome Sandbox only uses user-mode hooks -- it does not have a kernel mode driver. User-mode hooks can easily be bypassed. Sandboxie uses the Windows kernel to ensure that system changes are made only inside the sandbox.

I am unsure if Chrome can protect plugins that are running outside of Chrome as stand-alone applications (such as Java and Flash). This is from the Chromium FAQ:
"(In Chromium, the renderer processes are sandboxed and have this protection. Plugins for Chromium do not yet run inside the sandbox, because many are designed with the assumption that they have full access to the local system. Also note that Chromium renderer processes are isolated from the system, but not yet from the web. Therefore, domain-based data isolation is not yet provided)."

Design principles

Do not re-invent the wheel: It is tempting to extend the OS kernel with a better security model. Don't. Let the operating system apply its security to the objects it controls. On the other hand, it is OK to create application-level objects (abstractions) that have a custom security model.
Principle of least privilege: This should be applied both to the sandboxed code and to the code that controls the sandbox. In other words, the sandbox should work even if the user cannot elevate to super-user.
Assume sandboxed code is malicious code: For threat-modeling purposes, we consider the sandbox compromised (that is, running malicious code) once the execution path reaches past a few early calls in the main() function. In practice, it could happen as soon as the first external input is accepted, or right before the main loop is entered.
Be nimble: Non-malicious code does not try to access resources it cannot obtain. In this case the sandbox should impose near-zero performance impact. It's ok to have performance penalties for exceptional cases when a sensitive resource needs to be touched once in a controlled manner. This is usually the case if the OS security is used properly.
Emulation is not security: Emulation and virtual machine solutions do not by themselves provide security. The sandbox should not rely on code emulation, code translation, or patching to provide security.

Sandbox windows architecture

The Windows sandbox is a user-mode only sandbox. There are no special kernel mode drivers, and the user does not need to be an administrator in order for the sandbox to operate correctly. The sandbox is designed for 32-bit processes and has been tested on Windows 2000, Windows XP 32 bits, and Windows Vista 32 and 64 bits.

Sandbox operates at process-level granularity. Anything that needs to be sandboxed needs to live on a separate process. The minimal sandbox configuration has two processes: one that is a privileged controller known as the broker, and one or more sandboxed processes known as the target. Throughout the documentation and the code these two terms are used with that precise connotation. The sandbox is provided as a static library that must be linked to both the broker and the target executables.


Other caveats
The operating system might have bugs. Of interest are bugs in the Windows API that allow the bypass of the regular security checks. If such a bug exists, malware will be able to bypass the sandbox restrictions and broker policy and possibly compromise the computer. Under Windows, there is no practical way to prevent code in the sandbox from calling a system service.



Sandboxie in contrast, does reinvent the wheel and gives you kernel mode sandboxing which is more robust.

Now if the following is correct for Sandboxie, things from than have changed, maybe:
How does Sandboxie protect me, technically?

Sandboxie extends the operating system (OS) with sandboxing capabilities by blending into it. Applications can never access hardware such as disk storage directly, they have to ask the OS to do it for them. Since Sandboxie integrates into the OS, it can do what it does without risk of being circumvented.

The following classes of system objects are supervised by Sandboxie: Files, Disk Devices, Registry Keys, Process and Thread objects, Driver objects, and objects used for Inter-process communication: Named Pipes and Mailbox Objects, Events, Mutexs (Mutants in NT speak), Semaphores, Sections and LPC Ports. For some more information on this, see Sandbox Hierarchy.

Sandboxie also takes measures to prevent programs executing inside the sandbox from hijacking non-sandboxed programs and using them as a vehicle to operate outside the sandbox.

Sandboxie also prevents programs executing inside the sandbox from loading drivers directly. It also prevents programs from asking a central system component, known as the Service Control Manager, to load drivers on their behalf. In this way, drivers, and more importantly, rootkits, cannot be installed by a sandboxed program.

Also, regarding those vulnerabilities of Chrome, the real question if any of these Chrome's vulnerabilities mentioned on the link would be able to bypass Chrome's security mechanisms to completely disable Chrome or not?
Regarding plugins, I'm not even sure if it's possible to sandbox those plugins or not.
Also, it is not possible to as far as I know to isolate Chrome form the web either.

I am unsure if Chrome can protect plugins that are running outside of Chrome as stand-alone applications (such as Java and Flash). This is from the Chromium FAQ:
"(In Chromium, the renderer processes are sandboxed and have this protection. Plugins for Chromium do not yet run inside the sandbox, because many are designed with the assumption that they have full access to the local system. Also note that Chromium renderer processes are isolated from the system, but not yet from the web. Therefore, domain-based data isolation is not yet provided)."

Another difference is that the Chrome sandbox settings are all hard-coded inside Chrome. Sandboxie has a rich set of user-customizable settings.
Curt, 2 very quick questions, first question: Does Sandboxie (3x and 4x versions) use a kernel mode driver combined with user-mode hooks on both 32-bit and 64-bit versions?

Second very quick question: Does Sandboxie (3x and 4x versions) use the Windows kernel to ensure that system changes are made only inside the sandbox on both 32-bit and 64-bit versions?
